The Rubin Museum of Art (RMA) on West 17th Street showcases the art of the Himalayas and its surrounding regions (including Tibet, Burma, Nepal, Mongolia, Bhutan). RMA's impressive collection includes paintings, sculptures, textiles, ritual objects, and prints spanning a period from 2nd to 21st century.
The best time to visit RMA is on a Friday when they offer free admission from 7 to 10 pm. And unlike museums like the Whitney that say it's free admission but ask for a donation, RMA doesn't ask you for so much as a penny. Free means free. Three hours is more than ample time to enjoy the work of art on five floors at a slow pace.
No photography is allowed here; however, we snuck in just a few when we could without flash.
Another great thing about visiting the RMA on a Friday evening is that they offer two for the price of one drinks from 6 to 7 pm at their K2 Lounge located right next to their gift shop. They also have Cabaret Cinema on Fridays, which is free with a purchase of one cocktail. Recent films have included Labyrinth, The Shining, and Alice in Wonderland.
